Reading and Phonics
We care about reading and phonics at Oasis Academy Parkwood
The reading and phonics scheme we use to teach our young people is the Read Write Inc programme.
The programme is for:
- pupils in Reception to Year 2 who are learning to read and write.
- any pupils in KS2 who still require support.
Pupils take part in a 45 minute phonics lesson, five days a week. Phonics lessons are carefully planned with a structured, cohesive approach.
The programme has five key teaching principles:

One Education Reading Award
Silver Reading Award
We are thrilled to announce that the Academy has been awarded the national One Education Silver Reading Award. The award recognises everything that we do for reading here, the staff and children have worked so hard and we hope that they will continue to have amazing reading results and a love of reading for life.
We are really pleased that we are in the Scunthorpe Telegraph. You can follow this link to view the article:
Reading Clubs at the academy
Fred Club is a fun phonics club that runs weekly after school. All Year One children and selected Year Two children are invited to Fred Club.
Fred Club provides the children with additional opportunities to learn and practise their phonics through fun games and activities, led by teachers. There are also opportunities for individual teaching at Fred Club.
If you would like any additional information or would like your child to attend Fred Club, please see Mrs J Mell.
Golden Book Club
Tuesdays 3.25pm to 4.15pm
At Parkwood, we run a unique Golden Book Club for selected children in Years 3 and 4. Eight children in school are chosen to take part in Golden Book Club and received their Golden Ticket invitations in assembly.
The Golden book club is a weekly fun session of things to make and do, storytelling and books to loan. Golden Book Club is part of the North Lincolnshire Words Count Project and it is aimed at increasing the PLEASURE in reading.
Reading for pleasure raises the levels of reading and writing. There is evidence to suggest that there is a positive link between the amount of reading a child does, including reading for enjoyment, and how well they do at school.
The book club is run by Mrs J. Mell and Book Club Leaders. It is supported by Sarah Tipler from the Local Authority.
For more information, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs J Mell or visit the following website – which has a short video, presented by Sarah Tipler, explaining the benefits of Golden Book Club..
